Meet The Artist: Rose England

Festive cheers to all! This year, we have an unbelievably exciting collaboration in the works. We have a limited edition print from Rose England on our hands.

A collaboration print born out of a mutual love of each other’s work - we love Rose’s art, Rose loves our English rosé - not simply nominative determinism.

Artist, illustrator & print designer Rose England grew up on a rose farm - fitting for someone whose work blooms with the beauty of nature. We caught up with her over a can of bubbly rosé.

The Uncommon: Rose, you grew up on a rose farm! What was that like?
Rose England: Magical! I have so many happy memories there. My sister and I spent our days outside, playing in the water sprinklers and climbing on the forklifts in the warehouse. I felt completely free - the perfect playground for a child!
TU: What is it about flowers that you love?
RE: Their uniqueness! Every flower feels like its own little masterpiece, from their patterns and colours to their scents. They’re endlessly inspiring.
TU: What inspired your first piece of art?
RE: My grandmother. She always had us painting, crafting, or sewing at her house.  I can’t remember my first painting exactly, but it was definitely inspired by my grandmother!

She’s still my biggest supporter! She is an amazing woman!

TU: Most unexpected place to find inspiration?
RE: My dreams! Just as I’m drifting off, vivid ideas for paintings or designs will pop into my mind - like everything I’ve been mulling over that day suddenly clicks. I keep a notebook by my bed to sketch them out before they disappear.

TU: What’s your go-to song in the studio?
RE: I love a relaxed vibe when I’m painting. Leif Vollebeck is a favourite. He’s like a male Norah Jones and I am completely obsessed, his voice is magic!

TU: Tell us about this painting, what inspired you?
RE: The wine itself and The Uncommon’s beautiful branding. I loved the different flowers on the packaging, so I incorporated some of them into the painting. The little tortoise caught my eye too - so cute, I just had to add it!

This isn’t just any sparkling wine. So I added ribbons around the wine glasses (which I actually do myself) and played with a soft palette with a few bright pops of colour. It’s a love letter to bubbles and the joy of sharing them with friends.

TU: What’s the most uncommon gift you’ve ever received?
RE: A vintage jacket from my brother-in-law and his partner. We’d been vintage shopping in Valencia, and I fell in love with this jacket but left it behind because it was a bit pricey.

A few days later, they pretended they’d left a jacket at ours, but when I checked, there it was - with a note thanking me for their visit! I was completely shocked and so touched. Uncommon and unexpected - I’ll cherish forever.

TU: Eleanor, Gerald, Clarence or Penelope - which local are you sipping on most? Is Rosé your favourite? Can it be???
RE: Eleanor, your bubbly rosé, is definitely a summer favourite! But I tend to switch to white in the winter. Either way, I’m all about bubbles, whatever the season.

The print’s delicate design weaves soft florals, vibrant ribbons and an inquisitive tortoise into a dreamy homage. The A3 Fine Art Giclée print uses high-quality artist paper (315gsm) with rich, saturated colours using archival pigment inks for long life. It is a toast to life’s little moments.
